Should We All Be Three Legged Dogs?

The three legged dog does not complain about its situation. It doesn’t whine about having less than other dogs. It doesn’t lay around all day waiting for others to come and take care of it. The three legged dog goes about its business without complaint.

The three legged dog will still wag its tail, play with children, and get the most out of its life. It doesn’t think about the life it could have if only it still had four legs. It doesn’t envy other dogs for their extra legs and ability to run faster. The three legged dog accepts life as it is and does the best it can with what it’s been given.

I wonder if Americans should be more like the three legged dog. Instead of whining about what is wrong with our lives, we should appreciate what we have and do the best that we are able. Instead of lying around and looking for assistance from others, we should get back to work, look out for our own, and go about our business without complaint. Instead of envying those who have more and demanding that they do more for society, Americans should follow the example of the three legged dog.

  1. Your analogy only makes sense if a more wealthy dog cut off those other dogs' legs so he had more to chew on.

  2. Also, what do you do about a dog who lost both of it's front or back legs? They can't possibly construct the necessary wheels needed to get around, but with a little help they can still lead a fulfilling life without being put down unnecessarily.

  3. I think you're way off here, Heathen. While this analogy may be true for the small minority of shameless parasites who choose to game the system rather than pursue an honest living, it doesn't apply to the many people who are actively looking for work who get turned away from job after job when many employers admit they won't hire anyone who is currently unemployed.

    1. Matt said: "it doesn't apply to the many people who are actively looking for work who get turned away from job after job when many employers admit they won't hire anyone who is currently unemployed."

And so much of this is due to government policies which penalize and discourage employers from hiring and keeping employees. "Obamacare" has made this a lot worse, with the imposition of a per-employee tax, and the 30-a-week limit for "full time", which strongly encourages employers to cut the work hours in a week down to this level.

  4. On the contrary Matt. The people you describe are the three legged dogs who continue to do what they can. You make it sound like I'm calling all Americans shameless parasites, but I haven't. Hell, my comments aren't even addressing unemployment specifically.

I'm talking to the record number of people on food stamps and disability. I'm talking to Democrats who think the rich aren't paying their fair share. I'm talking to anyone that sits around whining about being victims instead of taking charge of their lives and proving that they aren't. Who could possibly disagree with that?

  5. You make the assumption that the people on food stamps don't need the help in order to eat, or that people on disability are actually able to find gainful employment on their own.

  6. Matt, if those folks on food stamps are sincerely trying to find work and do what they can but come up short, then that is what the safety net is for. It is not meant as a means to a lifestyle.

Heathen, as for your story, that would be a nice change of events if America was "going to the dogs" in the manner in which you wonderfully illustrated here.

  7. I haven't made any of those assumptions. Our unemployment problem is a policy issue that our dear leader needs to own. Indefinite extensions of unemployment benefits keep unemployment high.

As I said, I am not talking about those people who truly need assistance. I'm only referring to those who milk the system, could work but don't, could buy their own food but don't, and have a victim mindset. Three legged dogs don't think they are victims. They just go about life.

You are talking about completely different people than I am, and you're attributing your side of the discussion to me. The people you have in mind... I'm not talking about them.

  8. Social Security disability needs to be dramatically reformed. We have far too many people with mildly handicapping conditions who not only get on disability but who stay on it forever (that, and a lot of unscrupulous lawyers, too).

  9. Will; And this outrageous situation makes it hard in multiple ways for those who actually have serious disabilities.
